Can't believe a year has gone by already. When creating our new 2019 Poetry Padlet, I realized that a student posted two new poems on LAST year's Padlet in the fall. How great is that?! Poem in Your Pocket Day - a day of excitement at the PS!
On April 24th, WIS PS was abuzz with poetry. All pockets were full with student-written poems and family favorites. Ms. Anderson and Ms. Clingman handed out hundreds of English, French and Spanish poems and everyone got a chance to share aloud. Here are four original poems written by first graders:
Karen Kane presents Charlie & Frog to third grade
On April 3rd, local author Karen Kane gave our third graders a wonderful picture of her path to authorship and the inside scoop on Charlie & Frog and upcoming books in the series. Combining elements of both hearing and deaf cultures, Charlie & Frog is a mystery set in upstate New York.
Human beatboxer Christylez Bacon launches Poetry Month
On April 1st, Christylez Bacon both entertained WIS kids and taught them valuable lessons about adversity and resilience. With his humor, array of instruments including his mouth and body, and incredible ad-libbing hip-hop poet talent, Mr. Bacon took us into another world of rhythm, creativity and stories.
Author Megan Wagner Lloyd visits first grade
Feb. 14, 2019 - Tied with their unit on how we organize ourselves, author Megan Wagner Lloyd visited with first graders today and read her book Finding Wild. Students got to think about where they "find wild" in their neighborhoods here in the DC area. Ms Lloyd focused on how she revised her first draft to include more descriptive words and our students used their five senses to describe some natural objects, such as bark and peacock feathers.
World Read Aloud Day - February 1, 2019
All of our students are encouraged to spend some time reading out loud to their families and friends on World Read Aloud Day (WRAD). This year we have a full day of Skype visits lined up from authors and illustrators for our PreK through fifth graders. Here are the creators and the books they will be highlighting to our students:

BOOK FAIR!!
Our Book Fair of new French and Spanish books was a big success! Thank you to all of our families for supporting the Library and our students' reading.
Author Baptiste Paul presented to K and Gr 1
On September 14th, our kindergarteners and first graders were treated to a lively presentation from St. Lucian author Baptiste Paul, who recently published The Field. Baptiste described his childhood on the island, taught many Creole words and showed us his childhood "best friend" (a soccer ball).
